Genesis 16

memorize god’s word

write Genesis 15:6

And he believed in the Lord , and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

There are many names for God and knowing and speaking those names is a powerful tool for the believer (especially in prayer). Genesis 16:13 says: “So she called on the name of the Lord who spoke to her, ‘You are the God of seeing.’” El Roi in Hebrew is the name for The God Who Sees Me.

We live in a modern world where being seen and loved by others seems so important. We are flooded with the pressure to be seen on social media, at our workplaces, in our families, etc. But when you realize that the God of all Heaven and Earth sees you, the need for being seen and validated by others fades away.

When you feel unseen or unloved remind yourself that El Roi is the God who sees you, who loves you, who comforts you, and who has compassion on you just like He did with Hagar. He sees YOU!

Genesis 15 Review

After reading Genesis 15, study Galatians chapter 3. Take special notice of Galatians 3:6 as it relates to Genesis 15:6. Paul wanted to make it clear to the Galatians (among whom there was a push towards a works-based relationship with God) that in fact God saves people by grace through faith alone. It has nothing to do with our own human achievements. It was Abraham’s faith and faith alone that caused God to count him as righteous.

After reading Genesis 15 and Galatians 3, ask yourself these questions:

Are you one who gets caught up in a works-based faith?

Do you fall into the thinking that your actions help justify your righteousness?

Do you understand that obedience is a way our faith is evident to others and ultimately one way we delight in the Lord, and that works is not how you will be counted as righteous?

Have you ever, like many of the Galatians, fallen into this way of thinking? How has the revelation of God counting you as righteous through your faith in Christ alone changed your walk with God and with others? Share below!

Genesis 15:7-21

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”  But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed one born in my house is my heir!”--Genesis 15:1-3

God calls us to focus on Him, not our circumstances. In Genesis 15:1, God reminds Abram not to fear because it is God who protects and rewards. God is gently reminding Abram to refocus his attention on Him.

Instead, Abram’s response shows us that Abram’s focus is on his circumstance--he still does not have an heir. You see, to Abram, his circumstance looked impossible. He was old and seemingly past child bearing years. But God is bigger than impossible looking circumstances and His plans are always better than our plans. Abram had already identified who he thought would be his heir. But God is Sovereign and his plan always comes to fruition.

Like Abram are you focusing on your circumstance? Are you focused on solving your own problems? Or are you keeping your eyes on the Faithful One whose word always comes to pass? Today, let’s refocus our attention on Him.

Comment below with practical tips that help you refocus on the Lord.

Much of Lesson 9 revolves around God speaking and Abram listening. The Voice of God was Abram’s compass and it should be ours as well. Do you follow His voice and heed his instruction? Or like Abram in Ch. 16 do you sometimes falter and listen to the voice of others instead of the one true voice of the Lord? Listen to “The Voice of God” by Dante Bowe, Steffany Greitzinger, and Chandler Moore and worship Him for speaking to you still. Before you dig deep into this week’s Chapters, take time to sit in stillness and just be with the Lord; sit silently and listen for His voice. What is He saying to you today?
