Memorize God’s Word

Write God's Word Genesis 12:3

“I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

God>Famine

Famine: Extreme scarcity of food, starvation; can also mean any shortage or insufficiency.

The word famine is used throughout the Bible. Read these verses:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like rotten figs that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.” 2 Kings 8:1

“Then Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “Arise and go, you and your household, and stay wherever you can; for the LORD has called for a famine, and furthermore, it will come upon the land for seven years.” Jeremiah 29:17

“Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, “It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.” 2 Samuel

“So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe. And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.” Genesis 41:31-32

Who sends, calls, establishes, and brings the famine to pass in these verses?

All of these verses remind us of God’s omnipotence

(God holds all power. Nothing is too hard for God. What He wills He can accomplish.)

and sovereignty.

(God does everything according to His plan and pleasure. He controls all things.)

If God is in control of famine, He is also in control of ending famine; not to mention providing for his people during a time of shortage.

JOURNAL IT!

Sometimes we find ourselves focused on the famine in our own lives. What shortage or insufficiency is stealing your peace today? What famine is leaving you feeling uneasy? What do you need to lay down before God, the all powerful, controller of the universe?

Grab your attribute list and focus on who God is.

Praise Him for who He is!

Keep your eyes today on the God that lacks NOTHING and PROVIDES everything!

Genesis 12:4-9

“The Promised” Land

Yesterday we saw the PROMISE that God had given to Abram and today we will look at the LAND. The land of Canaan was promised to Abraham and his seed. (Genesis 12:1-7, 13:14-17, 15:18-21, 17:8, Deuteronomy 12:9-10, Psalm 105:11) The Promise is then renewed to Isaac in Genesis 26:3.

Thinking back to Lesson 5 & 6, where does this land get its name? (Also see Genesis 10:6, 9:22, 10:15-18)

The territory of Canaan extended from Sidon in the north to Gerar and Gaza in the south, and east as far as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, near Lasha. (Genesis 10:19 NLT) The boundaries of Canaan are also described in different parts of Scripture. (Exodus 23:31, Numbers 13:29, 34)

Canaan or the Promised Land may also be referred to by other names in the Bible, check it out!

The Sanctuary: Exodus 15:17

Palestine: Exodus 15:14

Land of Israel: 1 Samuel 13:19

Land of the Hebrews: Genesis 40:15

Land of the Jews: Acts 10:39

Land of the Promise: Hebrews 11:9

Land of Beulah: Isaiah 62:4

Holy Land: Zechariah 2:12

Lord’s Land: Hosea 9:3

Immanuel’s Land: Isaiah 8:8

Chapter 12 is just the beginning of this promise and this land. During your personal time this morning try to find other references in other books of the Bible about the land of Canaan, the Promised Land, and the events that happened there.

Here are a few verses to get you started!

Numbers 13:17, Joshua 1-24, Ezekiel 47:13, Hebrews 11:8-9

Genesis 12:1-3

Memorize God’s Word

Write Genesis 12:3

“I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Repetition = Pay Attention!

“Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”

Why do you think the phrase “I will” is being repeated several times in verses 1-3?

It is clear that the Lord (vs.1) is the One giving the promises to Abram. The question we may need to ask ourselves is not just the Who but also the How?

Think back to Lesson 5 when Kandice taught us about covenants. When God initiates an agreement with His people, it is always God who fulfills the agreement. These clearly were the Lord's plans, so by repeating the words “I will” The Author is driving home that  The LORD  would be the One to fulfill the promises declared to Abram.

Just like Abram, God has declared promises over you. Sit and think about what that means. What must you do to see the promises of God come about?

↓↓↓ Pray over the scripture below.  ↓↓↓

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.”  For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.  Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us.” 2 Corinthians 1:19-21
