Genesis 6:1-4

Memory Verse

write God’s Word

In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

Genesis 5:1b

Don’t panic, we know today’s verses are definitely ones that can make even the most seasoned Bible enthusiast scratch her head. With all the talk of the sons of God, and the daughters of men. Not to mention, giants aka Nephilim, yikes! Though the questions in our book don’t probe too far into the meanings of these puzzling phrases, we do believe they are so very important. So if you are feeling uncertain about these verses we want you to know so are we!

Major disagreements surround each of these verses. Digging deep and studying these verses in the original Hebrew doesn’t even clear the air completely. So, what’s a girl to do?

  1. Pray. Ask God to help you to understand what He has for you personally. Then ask Him to help you to be at peace with some of the mystery behind these verses.

  2. Accept that some things in the Word of God are a beautiful mystery. We may not always come to a strong conclusion of what certain phrases and verses are alluding to. And guess what?! IT’S OK.

  3. Study and dig, and study and dig some more. God’s Word never returns void. (Isaiah 55:11) “ALL (yes even the verses we are unsure of) Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) We shouldn’t avoid verses just because there are some unknown phrases in them.

    1. Ask yourself right now, when you read Genesis 6:1-4 is there anything that you can take away from these verses? We bet there is!

  4. Come to a conclusion about what you think these verses mean. Could you be wrong? Yep. But that’s what Bible discussion is about. Coming together to talk about what we have observed in Scripture and talking about it with excitement and awe.

  5. Most importantly when you come to small group discussion DON’T be offended if someone has a different view from you. Respect everyone and remember, the Holy Spirit is great at correcting His people!

Pray:

Father, You are incomprehensible! You are God! Secret things belong to You and the things You reveal to Your children are a beautiful treasure. God we ask that You pour out Your Knowledge and Wisdom over Your daughters! God may she come to Your Word faithfully. May she come when she understands and may she come when she  doesn't quite get it. God may she come because Your Word is life. It is bread and water for her  hungry and thirsty soul. Let it be about meeting You and knowing You. Not about her own understanding. Give each lady reading this an undying love for Your Word. Light in her fire, a desire to spend hours on verses she doesn’t yet understand. Give her a desire to commune with You in prayer and fellowship daily. Give her the confidence to discuss hard verses with her sisters in Christ. Thank you for giving us Your Word. Thank you for this study. Let your fruit abound! In Jesus Name. Amen!

Reflect and Praise

Memory Verse

write God’s Word

In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

Genesis 5:1b

Push play on the lyric video and…

Soak in the presence of our great God!

Tell Him how grateful you are that He is our Rock of Salvation.

Praise Him for being Creator!

Speak of His greatness!

Tell Him there is no one like Him!

Praise Him for making a way for you to overcome sin and death!

Then…

Take some time and reflect on the verses we have studied. It’s been a very intense couple of weeks! Let’s be real… the Fall of mankind and the spiral into rebellion aren’t the easiest couple of chapters in the Bible. Talk to Him about the feelings or questions these chapters may have stirred in you. Then listen as He gently speaks to your heart. Sit still, and maybe even journal your thoughts this morning. Take a free morning and just spend time with Jesus and most importantly worship Him!

The Family

Genealogies are one part of the Bible that we tend to want to skip over. The names are hard to pronounce and the text is usually repetitive. Over the next two days we will read of the Family of Cain and the Family of Adam. If we skip over these few paragraphs we will miss so much information that points us to the big picture of Scripture.

A genealogy is a line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor. In the Bible genealogy helps point us to the Messiah!

Cain and Seth’s genealogy have some similarities that we should give some attention to. Without close study and observation we can easily be confused and caught up in a case of mistaken identity.

Grab Your Journal!

Read verse 4:17

Who did Cain name the city he built after?

Read 5:24

Who walked with God?

Is Enoch from Chapter 4 the same as the Enoch in Chapter 5?

Why do you think they are the same or different?

Read 4:19

Who took two wives?

Read 5:28-29

Who lived one hundred and eighty two years and had a son named Noah?

Is the Lamech from Chapter 4 the same as the Lamech in Chapter 5?

Why do you think they are the same or different?

Are the descendants of Cain portrayed as positive or negative?

List some examples.

Are the descendants of Seth portrayed as positive or negative?

List some examples.

Genealogies can be tough to read! But they give us specifics and keep us tuned in to what, or actually who is most important in the Bible’s overall story. Genealogy confirms. It is a record of history that should not be taken for granted! So the next time you come across a list of names of who begat who, don’t rush. See what similarities and differences you can find. Think back over names you’ve encountered. Do any ring a bell?

Remember there is a purpose and ALL of God’s Word is so important.

For help with the questions on day 1 let’s dive deeper into the term “an offering to the Lord” (vs.3)

The Hebrew word minchach used here for offering is a gift or present, given out of freewill.

Have you ever received a re-gifted gift? Or given one? A re-gifted gift usually is given because the giver forgot to purchase a gift or because they have been given a gift they don’t really want and passing it along seems like a good option. Undoubtedly, a re-gifted gift does not scream “You are important to me and I scoured the earth to bestow upon you this greatness.”

I attended a Christmas celebration one year and as we drew numbers and one by one went to select a gift from the table, a friend of mine opened her gift. While part of the gift was newly purchased, one item, a Santa figurine was clearly past its prime. His face was dirty and his hair and beard were coming detached from his body! We giggled, but I thought to myself why had the gift giver included such a strange addition to the gift basket? I can say without a doubt the giver of this gift did not take the time to consider who would receive this gift. There were definitely no sentimental feelings attached to this sad Santa.

Personally I’ve always struggled with giving gifts. I worry and freight over making the right selection. I always want to make the recipient of the gift feel loved and celebrated. Special. I love to see the reaction of the person opening the gift. Gift giving should be about the recipient not the gift itself. I’m sure you would agree with me that receiving small, handmade gifts from our children makes us  feel more loved and adored than some of the pricey ones we’ve received.

Read Genesis 4:3-4 in the NLT

What are the differences in Cain and Abel’s offerings?

JOURNAL PROMPT:

Think about the sweetest gifts you’ve ever been given. Was it actually the gift or the giver that made the gift priceless to you? Maybe it wasn’t even a tangible gift. Was it someones time? A letter or card?

God is the King of the World, He needs nothing from His people. He is self sustaining and lacks nothing. What kind of offering or gift can you give to Someone so special?

Pray and thank God for being a great example. He is the best Gift Giver. Ask Him to show you areas in your life that you need to give like Him and to Him!

Comment below and tell us the most precious gift you’ve ever received!

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17
