Genesis 9:18-29

Memory Verse

Write God’s Word

I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

Genesis 9:13

We mentioned last week that looking at lineage in scripture can be tedious and daunting; however, it is important because it always does two things: 1.) it connects passages one may have thought unconnected into one unified story and 2.) that story always points to Jesus.

So, as you study Noah’s descendants know there is a reason they are mentioned. The most obvious answer is that from Shem, Ham, and Japheth the earth will be repopulated. Genesis 9:19 says “These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth was populated.”

But if you look more closely Shem, Ham, and Japheth go on to be the fathers of nations. Spend some time this morning looking at what nations come from which brother. Are their actions in Genesis 9:18-20 connected to the nations they become? Which of the three brothers does Jesus descend from? Why is this important?

Pray: Thank God today for showing us the lineage of Jesus. Thank Him that by grace through faith it is also your ancestral line...for as a believer you have been adopted into the family. You, my beautiful sister, are a co-heir with Christ.

Genesis 8:20-9:17

Memory Verse

Write God’s Word

I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

Genesis 9:13

The first thing we know Noah did once leaving the ark was build an altar and offer burnt offerings to God. Noah was grateful. A thankful heart willing to sacrifice for the Lord never goes unnoticed.

Read Psalm 63 and savor the words of David to God here. David approaches God savoring His goodness and power as the answers to his heart’s hunger and thirst. He praises God for being his help, his protector, his advocate, and his provider.

Then, listen to Shane & Shane’s rendition of Psalm 63 and make it the cry of your heart too.

Genesis 7:1-8:19

Memory Verse

Write God’s Word

I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

Genesis 9:13

Have you ever been in the waiting on God stage of life? Perhaps you were waiting for a change in jobs, for the right spouse to to come along, or for the blessing of a child. Waiting is never easy.

Yet here in Genesis we see Noah, a man of great faith, not only build an ark to prepare for a flood in a world that had never seen rain, but also WAIT on the Lord to tell him when to come out.

Read Chapter 8 again carefully taking into account the time Noah and company had been on the ark, how long it took the water to subside, and when Noah actually moved. Noah WAITED on God to say Go into the ark (Gen. 7:1) and he WAITED on God to go out of the ark (Gen. 8:16).

Grab your journal: What are you waiting on today? Does Noah’s story of FAITH and obedience encourage you? What can you learn from Noah that will help encourage you in your own waiting stage of life?

Genesis 6:5-22

Memory Verse

Write God’s Word

I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

Genesis 9:13

We cannot pick and choose which parts of God we love. We are commanded in Deuteronomy 6:5, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” All of our being is to love ALL of God.

Grab your attributes list. What attributes of God do you see in verses 6:5-22? Which of these attributes are easy for you to accept? Which of them do you wrestle with understanding or even accepting?

The story of Noah and the flood is one of God’s wrath and judgement. Over time, we have softened it into a cute children’s story to perhaps soften the blow of what is really happening in the scripture here. BUT...if we are to truly love God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength, we must KNOW GOD and accept WHO He is. He is wrathful because He hates all unrighteousness, all sin.

Pray: Ask the Holy Spirit to reconcile any misconceptions you may have about WHO God is and lead you to the truth of God’s character in the scriptures. Ask God to reveal why His attributes of wrath and any others you may wrestle with are necessary. Ask God to realign your heart and will to His.
