Genesis 31

Memorize God’s Word: “Now then, whatever God has said to you, do it.” Genesis 31:16b

“Now, Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what was our fathers he has acquired all this wealth.” And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban and indeed it was not favorable toward him as before. Then the Lord said to Jacob, Return to the land of your fathers and to your family and I will be with you.” Genesis 31:1-3

These 3 little verses set the scene for our entire week of study. Ask yourself these question…

What has changed?

Who will be affected by this twist in our story?

What is God’s role in this? What promise does God speak?

The way we view these first 3 verses will shape the rest of our lesson. Even if you’ve already answered the questions in your study, I challenge you to take some time and sit with these verses.

What is God saying to you personally?

Words to know this week:

Teraphim: Teraphim is the Hebrew word for household god’s or idols. Spend some time this week and look over these other places in scripture where this word is referenced: 1 Samuel 19:13, 16, 2 Kings 23:24, Ezekiel 21:21, Zechariah 10:2

Gilead: (part of modern Jordan) a mountainous region bounded on the west by the Jordan, on the north by Bashan, on the east by the Arabian plateau, and on the south by Moab and Ammon; sometimes called ‘Mount Gilead’ or the ‘land of Gilead’. Here are some other places in the Bible that talk about Gilead: Numbers 32:1, 26, 29, Deuteronomy 2:36, 3:10, 12, 13, Judges 7:3, 10:18, Obadiah 1:19

Jegar Sahadutha: (Aramaic) witness heap, the place of the covenant located on mount Gilead

Galeed: (Hebrew) witness heap, the place of the covenant located on mount Gilead

Nahor: Laban’s father, Abraham’s brother.
