Genesis 17 Review

memorize god’s word

write colossians 2:11

In Him you were circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.

Consider the memory verse for this week.

Are you asking God to help you put off the body of the sins of the flesh? Are you choosing to believe that in Christ you are a new creation, made righteous and set apart only by your faith in Him alone?

Take some time and record in the comments how you have seen God’s activity during the week. (How has He provided, answered, comforted, reconciled, guided, etc.?)

What attributes of God stood out to you this week during your study?

How will you continue to live in light of these truths?

Spend some time simply PRAISING GOD FOR WHO HE IS! Push play on the lyric video below (this will be our praise song for Monday night) and sing praises to God Almighty! Embrace your new identity and believe that you are who God says you are!!

But Sarah Shall Be Her Name…

On day 1 in our lesson this week we saw God change Abram’s name from Abram (father of many) to Abraham (father of many nations). Today we see God change Sarai (my lady, or my princess) to Sarah (the princess of a multitude) like Abraham, Sarah's new name proclaims the promise God has declared over her life. When God speaks something over His people it is not merely just a piece of who they are, it becomes their new identity.  Here are some more examples:

Read:

Genesis 32:28

John 1:35-44

In Christ we too have a new identity, just like Abraham, Sarah, Israel, and Peter.  When we called on Jesus to save us, we were given a new identity. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Though sometimes we can be tempted to stay in our old identity and carry God’s promises around like an accessory that we can take on and off according to our circumstance. How much more abundant and fruitful might our lives be if we boldly embraced the new name “daughter” we’ve all been given!?!

BE STILL!

Take some time this morning in prayer and with your journal, look at each of these promises and ask yourself this question over each of these promises.

Am I living as if this promise is the  “new me” or am I living as though they only sometimes apply to me?

Almighty God is always with me (Matthew 28:20, Joshua 1:9)

Almighty God will protect me (Psalm 5:11, 2 Samuel 22:3-4)

Almighty God will be my strength ( Exodus 15:2, 2 Timothy 1:7)

Almighty God will answer me (Luke 11:9, Jeremiah 29:12)

Almighty God will provide for me (Philippians 4:19, 1 Corinthians 10:13)

Almighty God will give me peace (2 Thessalonians 3:16, Isaiah 26:3)

Almighty God will always love me (1 John 4:16, Jeremiah 31:3)

Genesis 17:9-14

Introduction to Circumcision

The surgical removal of the foreskin was typically done with a razor sharp flint knife (see Joshua 5:2-3), on male newborns eight days old. It is important to note that no female circumcision was authorized. The act of circumcision signified the surrender of the first portion of the bodily instrument used to fulfill God’s first command to humanity, “be fruitful and multiply.” (Genesis 1:28) Circumcision symbolized an individual's willingness to submit all of himself to God and to all of His covenant commands. Therefore every male child (and man of old) among them was to be circumcised, regardless of status, wealth, master or slave, all of the Israelite community would share the common experience and the common mark of circumcision. Making all Israelites equal before God. All who didn’t share the mark of circumcision would be cut off from his people because he had broken the covenant with the Lord.

What part of the body do these verses specifically talk about?

How is the circumcision in Genesis, Deuteronomy, and Leviticus the same? How is it different?

I Am the Almighty God

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.  Genesis 17:1 KJV

In lesson 9 we saw the name El Roi (the God who sees) and today in our text we see God refer to Himself as Almighty God or El Shaddai. God is referred to or refers to Himself  by many different names throughout the Bible. If we are careful to stop and look at the meaning of these names we can better understand who God is and His unchanging nature. While Almighty God seems pretty self explanatory we can always learn more about God through His living Word.

Attribute Time!

Omnipotence = Almighty

Let’s look into God’s omnipotence  to get a better understanding of what God is saying of Himself to Abram and to us in chapter 17.

Read Exodus Chapter 6:1-8

What does this text say to you about the omnipotence of God?

Now dig deeper!

All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, “What have You done?” Daniel 4:35 NKJV

But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases. Psalm 115:3 NKJV

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20 NLT

Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me. Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. Isaiah 46:9-10 NKJV

Tying the attribute Omnipotence to the name Almighty God helps us to understand that God is who He says He is. Having a better understanding of God’s true nature should move us to a deeper reverence, trust and faith in Him.
