Genesis 22 Review

memorize god’s word

And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.

Consider the memory verse for this week. How has He provided, answered, comforted, reconciled, guided, etc.?

What attributes of God stood out to you this week during your study?

How will you continue to live in light of these truths?

Spend some time simply PRAISING GOD FOR WHO HE IS! Push play on the lyric video below (this will be our praise song for Monday the 30th) and sing God’s praises with a heart of gratitude for Jesus Christ!

Genesis 22:9-14

“Then they came to the place of which God had told them.” Genesis 22:9

WTB-06-Moriah-and-Golgotha-19.png

That place was the Land of Moriah (vs 2) also known as Jerusalem. This is the place in which Abraham built an altar to sacrifice Isaac. But there is so much more that is to take place in this significant land! Check it out these other facts and happenings in the Land if Moriah:

The land of Moriah is also referred to as Mount Zion. (Psalm 48:2, Isaiah 5)

In Genesis 14:18 We see the king of Salem or JeruSALEM. Melchizedek was the King of Salem or Jerusalem! (I missed this! Did anyone catch this?) Other names for this area are Jebus, and the city of David.

The Land of Moriah is the same area that David would purchase the threshing floor from Arunah the Jebusite (1 Chronicles 21:22, 2 Samuel 24:21) in preparation for building the temple. Though God didn’t allow David to build the house of the Lord (1 Chronicles 17) He did allow David’s son Solomon to construct the temple at this very location. (2 Chronicles 3:1)

The temple was destroyed by King Nebuchadnezzar and his armies in 587/586 B.C (2 Chronicles 36:19) and the temple was rebuilt after the Jews returned after the Babylonian captivity. (Ezra 4-6)

It is the same temple where Jesus was circumcised and dedicated. (Luke 2:21-24) And where Mary and Joseph found a young Jesus sitting and listening to teachers and asking questions when they thought they had lost the young Messiah on their journey back to Nazareth. (Luke 2:39-50)

The Land of Moriah is the land that Jesus would perform many miracles and ultimately offer Himself as a sacrifice for the worlds sin on the peak of Moriah at Golgatha. (John 19)

When we study God’s Word we should ask ourselves the who, what, when, where and why. Today we see how important the “where” really was. This place that Abraham takes Isaac is so significant in the whole story of Scripture and points us right to Jesus! It’s just amazing to see God’s plan from the very beginning in Genesis all the way to the Gospels! (And not to mention the story isn’t over, there is much more to come!)

Thanksgiving & Gratitude

“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving.” Psalm 79:13

Take some time today and thank God for His Omniscience and Sovereignty. Praise Him for being a God that carries out His plans from beginning to end. He knows what will take place. He knows where it will happen. He is a God of detail. He doesn’t miss a thing!

“Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you. I will praise your name, for you have accomplished wonders, plans formed long ago with perfect faithfulness.” Isaiah 25:1

Hebrews 11

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

We have referenced Hebrews 11 so many times in our study! I don’t know about you but this Chapter in Hebrews has been a blessing to me during 2020! By now we have picked these verses apart but because God’s Word is living and active we know that even if we are familiar with a verse, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still treasure there waiting to be extracted. Let’s take yet another look at this remarkable passage!

The Greek word hypostasis translated substance has been previously used to describe the relationship between Christ and God (11:1-3) and the firm confidence that believers possess (3:14). Faith is not fleeting but substantial enough to generate confidence.

The Greek word for evidence is elegchos, indicates an inner conviction not based on visible matters.

Divine approval is the primary consequence of faith. -Holmon Study Bible

Read Hebrews 3

Who is first and foremost counted most faithful?

What is the difference in the response of those in Chapter 3:16-19 and those named in Chapter 11?

Those who refused to hear did not enter into the promised land because of their unbelief. If divine approval is the primary consequence of Faith what is the divine consequence for unbelief?

Thanksgiving & Gratitude

“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving.” Psalm 79:13

Jesus was first faithful making a way for those listed in the ‘Hall of Faith” and making a way for us today. Jesus is the most good and perfect gift from above. Thank God for sending His only Son, whom He loved, as a sacrifice and making a way for us to enter into the “promised land” and dwell with Him for all of eternity!

Abraham Faces His Greatest Test

Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”  Genesis 22:1

The Hebrew word Nissah, translated here as tested, means to “prove the quality of” not “to entice to do wrong.”

God tests, He doesn’t tempt.

 Read and Reflect

James 1:13-18 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. 18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

*Where does James say temptation comes from?

*Read verse 17 & 18 again, in light of this verse, how might that have shaped Abrahams ability to act in obedience concerning God’s command in verse 2 of our reading today?

*How should it shape our obedience when we are tested?

Thanksgiving & Gratitude

“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving.” Psalm 79:13

James 1:17 says “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…” meditate on that everyday leading up to Thanksgiving. Speak words of gratitude and praise to the Father of lights! Glorify His most worthy name!
